Approaches to Literature week5

▲The Reader: It is a 2008 German-American romantic drama film based on the 1995 German novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink.

It tells the story of Michael Berg, a German lawyer who as a mid-teenager in 1958 had an affair with an older woman, Hanna Schmitz, who then disappeared only to resurface years later as one of the defendants in a war crimes trial stemming from her actions as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp.
  ▽theme: unfairness of power
1. Titanic- [When life is threaten, differences between the rich and the poor]
Cameron's inspiration for the film came from his fascination with shipwrecks; he felt a love story interspersed with the human loss would be essential to convey the emotional impact of the disaster.
2. Sense and Sensibility– [Women's dowry will ensure a better life]
It is a 1995 American period drama film directed by Ang Lee and based on Jane Austen's 1811 novel of the same name.
3. The Reader- [the affair between a lawyer and an ordinary older woman]
→In the film, Michael had read those books to Hanna Schmitz, which are “The Odyssey”, “Huck Finn”, and “the Lady with the Dog”.

▲The power of literacy:

“Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge
gives.”- James Madison

It is a short story by Anton Chekhov first published in 1899.
It tells the story of an adulterous affair between a Russian banker and a young lady he meets while vacationing in Yalta.
▽Think about few questions before reading:
  Who is that lady?
  How come with the dog?
Why should we know about it?
